Malaysia and Italy experience biggest demand growth for Singaporeans planning Fall travel
SINGAPORE, 16 August, 2022 - Ahead of the Fall travel season and September school holidays, today, Tripadvisor releases its 2022 Fall Travel Index, to reveal what and where is heating up for Singaporean travellers this season.
The study, which is based on a combination of Tripadvisor’s first party search and proprietary consumer sentiment data, shows that while the busy summer travel season is coming to an end, Singaporeans’ appetite to head off on holiday is by no means over. While core inflation rates have just risen to 3.6% - its fastest pace in more than a decade - over three-quarters of Singaporean respondents (81%) say that they are planning a Fall break this year.
Cost of living crisis: Singaporeans will still travel, albeit a bit differently
While the Tripadvisor Fall Travel Index shows that spiralling costs won’t put Singaporeans off travelling this upcoming season, of those booking trips, nearly three out of four (73%) said that inflation will impact the way in which they travel. Thirty-eight percent said that they will likely travel for shorter lengths of time and thirty-five percent said that they will likely travel somewhere closer to home than previously planned.
For the majority of Singaporeans, continued rising costs are unsurprisingly prompting consumers to alter their spending habits, inclusive of adjusting their travel plans. Despite rising costs, however, the survey also showed that a quarter (25%) Singaporeans still intend to travel as planned this Fall - inflation be damned.
For many, it seems that a holiday is too precious to give up and Singaporeans would rather cut back on expenses elsewhere to protect that all important time away. In fact, one in three (67%) of SG respondents said that they plan to travel more this Fall than they did during the same period last year and 65% plan to spend more. This is also reflected in traveller behaviour, as Tripadvisor site data shows that the average value of a trip booked by Singaporean travellers this Fall is 41% higher than the same period in 2021.
Singaporeans bucking global domestic travel trend to jet off abroad
This season’s instalment of the Tripadvisor Travel Index indicates that globally, domestic trips are still the number one choice, with almost two-thirds (60%) of global travellers opting to travel this way this Fall. However, Singaporeans are going against the grain this season with international travel blowing way past domestic, as 88% say that they plan to travel abroad verus 12% choosing to go the staycation route.
Whether going abroad or not, most Singaporeans (70%) say that they plan to travel between one and six hours from home, while more than a quarter (30%) are heading somewhere seven or more hours away. The majority (51%) of Singaporeans are planning to take a trip of at least four nights this Fall and Tripadvisor search data underlines the first and second weeks of September as the most popular travel dates for SG travellers.
Genting Highlands tops the list of trending Fall hotspots for Singaporeans
When looking at destinations which have seen the biggest year-on-year increase in searches on Tripadvisor by Singaporeans for trips this Fall, Genting Highlands tops the list. This is followed by one of the world’s shopping capitals - Milan.
A 5 hour drive from Singapore, Genting Highlands is known for its fresh air and cooler temperatures, with fun activities for the whole family. Aside from its resort life, visitors flock to the hill station to enjoy mountain scenery, strawberry farms, and a relatively undisturbed, natural rain forest.
For the Singaporean shopaholics, Milan is a must-do destination. Along with shopping, this gem of a city has a lot to offer from stunning cathedrals, trendy restaurants, gorgeous cafes, and the longstanding Milanese tradition of aperitivo. On this historic Milan tour, see Milan’s highlights including the UNESCO-listed monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo Da Vinci’s iconic 'Last Supper,' the Sforza Castle, the Milan Cathedral, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Food is unsurprisingly the most exciting part of trip for Singaporeans
When it comes to the most exciting components of a trip, the Tripadvisor Fall Travel Index revealed that the top five picks for Singaporeans are: food (74%), scenery (63%), shopping (48%), culture (48%) and activities (46%).
One in three (34%) said that the purpose of their trip is to experience something new and unique and nearly half (46%) have booked an on-trip activity ahead of their trip to help them do so.
As many Singaporeans report wanting new and unique experiences this Fall, below Tripadvisor breaks down the top ten trending destinations for Singaporeans, along with a top-rated experience to be had there.
