LONDON, U.K., 2 December, 2020 -- Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel platform, today released findings from its Winter Travel Index, providing insights into where Brits are planning on travelling over the Christmas holidays.
With the UK in lockdown throughout the month of November, Brits took to dreaming of their next getaway - and the search for sun was clearly high on the agenda. Based on accommodation searches on Tripadvisor for check-in dates over the Christmas period*, the Canary Islands dominates the list of most popular international destinations researched by Brits - with SEVEN of its destinations among the top ten. At the top of the list, Costa Adeje (Tenerife) is the most popular international destination for Brits this winter.
This year’s top ten is in stark contrast to the most popular international destinations for Brits over the same time period last year. In 2019, it was city destinations like New York, Amsterdam and Paris that dominated the list.
Looking at UK staycations, Whitby, Inverness, Bowness, Torquay and Windermere are the fastest recovering domestic destinations for Christmas getaways, based on year-on-year demand. These destinations were all popular staycation breaks over the summer months as well, which highlights that more remote and countryside destinations remain the staycation of choice for many Brits this winter. This trend doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon, as just over half (51%) of travellers stated that in the next three months they plan on taking an outdoors/nature trip**.
As well as an outdoor setting, travellers are seeking luxury with the types of accommodation they are searching for. Luxury, romantic and boutique styles of properties are currently recovering the fastest compared to this time last year***.
When surveyed, more than a fifth (21%) of Brits said they are planning on travelling for the December holidays this year. This compares to just under half (48%) who said they travelled over the same period last year.
Just under half (42%) of respondents said they feel safe to travel over the December holidays compared to just under a third (33%) who said they did not feel safe to do so at all. Additionally, two fifths (40%) said travel is still important to them and a further 43% are still thinking about travel and where to go next.
Lastly, 43% of U.K. respondents said that for their next trip they would prefer to travel somewhere they can support their local business. This shows that after a difficult year people are still keen to find the good out there and support hospitality businesses at a time when they need it most.
