LONDON, UK, 15 May 2018 – Majorca and New York are the most popular short and long haul destinations for Brits travelling abroad this summer, according to the travel and booking site, TripAdvisor.
Spain boasts five of the top 10 short-haul destinations: Majorca, Tenerife, Benidorm, Ibiza and Lanzarote, which take first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth place.
On the long-haul list, five destinations in the Americas dominate the top 10 with New York, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Cancun taking first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.
The TripAdvisor Summer Holiday Value report published today has revealed the top 10 long-haul and short-haul destinations for British holiday-goers this summer, based on destinations seeing the highest interest by UK travellers on TripAdvisor in 2018, along with the average one-week holiday costs for hotels and airfares. The report helps travellers discover savings at popular travel destinations by highlighting the least expensive week to visit.
Short-haul: Ibiza offers best bargain
When comparing the average cost of a week’s holiday among the top ten short-haul destinations, across the whole of the summer season, Benidorm is the cheapest overall, both for the average cost of a week’s holiday (£1,149) and when considering individual dates over the summer (£899 if travelling the first week of June). However, if evaluating where travellers can save the most this summer by avoiding peak travel dates, it is actually Ibiza that offers the best savings for Brits who choose their dates wisely.
While Ibiza is one of the most expensive destinations overall, travellers who book a trip to travel between 28 May – 4 June stand to save a huge 55% compared with the most expensive week of 6 – 13 August, which makes the popular island resort significantly more affordable.
Long-haul: Biggest savings found in San Francisco and Ko Samui
When looking at the top ten long-haul destinations, Phuket offers the best value overall, both for the average cost of a week’s holiday (£1,109) and when considering individual dates over the summer (£1,058 if travelling the first week of June). However, while Phuket is the cheapest long haul destination, the savings made between the least expensive period (28 May – 4 June) and most expensive period (2 July – 9 July) are not hugely significant at 7%.
For travellers able to stretch their budget, as is the case with the long-haul destinations, while San Francisco is the most expensive destination, it does offer travellers the biggest savings if travelling at the right time. A trip to San Francisco during the least expensive week of 28 May – 4 June will cost £2,313 versus £2,950 during the most expensive week of 16 – 23 July – a saving of 28%. Ko Samui in Thailand also offers travellers a saving of 28% if travelling 28 May – 4 June versus its most expensive week of 13 – 20 August.
“This report highlights just how much of a difference financially it can make to choose your dates of travel carefully when planning a summer trip – the least expensive week in the summer period versus the most expensive week can mean huge savings. For example, travellers who book a trip to Ibiza on TripAdvisor for the first week of June instead of the beginning of August can save a staggering £883 – that’s almost the cost of a whole week in Benidorm – two holidays for the price of one!” advised Hayley Coleman, TripAdvisor spokesperson.
