Dropping the ball – and the possum – on New Year’s Eve

If current bookings on are any indication, Times Square will be the most popular place to ring in 2012, with a forecast for mild weather in the Northeast helping to push the Big Apple's famous drop ahead of fireworks along the Las Vegas Strip. (This year also marks the 40th anniversary of Dick Clark's iconic New Year's Rockin' Eve show.)

But as TripAdvisor's annual list of quirky New Year's Eve celebrations makes abundantly clear, would-be revelers have no shortage of countdown alternatives to New York's (newly energy efficient) crystal ball.

Big city options include the Peach Drop in Atlanta and Orange Drop in Miami, while Mobile, Ala. has MoonPie Over Mobile - an homage to the city's annual consumption of more than 4 million of the Chattanooga-made sweet treats.
